How to cancel Xbox Game Pass
Stop future Game Pass payments, confirm your expiry date and check any refund option before you finish.
Step by step
Follow the steps for the platform or store that manages your subscription.
Browser — computer or phone
- Open your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the account that purchased Game Pass.
- Locate the membership and open Manage. If it instead offers to turn recurring billing on, renewal is already off; note the expiry date.
- Choose Cancel subscription and read the available choices. Stopping future renewal and ending access immediately with an eligible refund are different outcomes.
- Complete the relevant confirmation and save the end date or refund decision shown.
Xbox console
- Open the guide using the Xbox button.
- Follow Profile & system → Settings → Account → Subscriptions.
- Choose the Game Pass membership, use Cancel subscription and follow the confirmation flow.
- Read any refund offer carefully and confirm when your access will end.
Refunds
Check the refund conditions for the provider or store that took your payment.
- Access after stopping renewal
- Turning recurring billing off stops future charges while benefits remain until expiry. An immediate cancellation with a refund can end access sooner.
- US Xbox refund guidance
- The checked US Xbox article describes initial-payment refunds within 30 days or before the first recurring bill, whichever is earlier. It also describes a latest-renewal refund within 30 days, limited to once per Microsoft account per Xbox subscription product. Use its cancellation process to check eligibility.
- Country and seller matter
- Some markets have additional prorated-refund rules. Prepaid retail codes follow the retailer’s return policy. Use the linked Xbox policy for your country rather than applying the US summary universally.
What you keep and lose
Review what remains available and which membership benefits end when you cancel.
You keep
- The membership’s benefits until expiry when you only stop recurring billing
- Games you purchased separately rather than accessing solely through Game Pass
You lose
- Access supplied by the Game Pass library after membership expiry, unless you have another valid license
- Cloud gaming and other benefits supplied by the cancelled tier
- Console multiplayer supplied by that membership for games that require it

Decide whether you want to stop renewal or end access
Switching off renewal leaves the remaining paid time available. The other possibility, if offered and eligible, is to end the subscription immediately with a refund. Read the outcome displayed by the account page before accepting it.
Open Microsoft Services & subscriptions to manage the membership. These steps apply to the account that owns it, not just any account using the same console.
If a payment has already been taken
Use the Xbox cancellation and refund instructions, including the cancellation flow they describe. The page explains which initial or recurring charges may qualify and which countries have additional rules. The US summary above is not a promise about every transaction or country.
Keep the charge date and receipt available. Turning renewal off is not itself confirmation that the previous charge will be returned.
If you are planning a break
Compare your local Game Pass tier prices with what you actually use before the next renewal. If you compare a monthly and annual product elsewhere, use the monthly-versus-annual calculator with real quotes for both options. Do not invent an annual Game Pass plan by multiplying a monthly charge by twelve.
If the account screen does not match
Check the purchasing account and billing provider first. An expired payment method, overdue amount or third-party purchase can require a different next step. Follow the official account-management guidance and the Xbox support article linked below rather than assuming cancellation succeeded.

What does Turn on recurring billing mean?
Microsoft says that when this appears instead of the management option, automatic renewal is already off. Your subscription should end on the displayed expiry date. Check that date rather than turning renewal back on.
Can I cancel Game Pass from a phone?
Yes. Use a mobile browser to open the Microsoft account’s subscription page, sign in with the purchasing account and follow its management flow.
Do downloaded Game Pass games become mine?
No. Downloading a game through the library does not provide permanent ownership. Xbox says library access depends on a valid membership and the title remaining available. A separate purchase is a different license.
Does every cancellation produce a refund?
No. Xbox distinguishes switching off renewal from immediate cancellation with an eligible refund. Use the current cancellation and refund flow for your purchase and account country.
What if the membership is missing?
Check the Microsoft account that made the purchase and the seller shown on the receipt. If another store or provider bills you, follow its management instructions. Contact official support if you cannot identify the charge.
